Burnet, Llano softball players chosen for TCGA all-state teams

The Highland Lakes has several talented softball players who are on the Texas Girls Coaches Association all-state teams or are chosen to compete in the organization’s all-star game.

Burnet graduate Savannah Gomez was named to the Class 4A all-state team. Gomez along with fellow graduates Katie Barnett, Yareli Vega and Rylea Whitus were named academic all-state,

Llano juniors Gwyn Burnett and Skylar Brown were named to the Class 3A all-state team, while senior pitcher Madison Kloepper will play in the TCGA all-star game July 12 in Arlington.

Kloepper, who committed to play for Western New Mexico University, has an ERA of 1.13, has struck out 95 batters, gave up nine earned runs, and bats .419.

“She’s gotten better every year, she’s gotten stronger,” Llano head coach Beau Burnett said. “Her stats speak for themselves. It’s a huge honor.”

Burnett nominated Kloepper as a pitcher for the all-state team then as a first baseman, while Brown was nominated as a first baseman then as a pitcher.

Brown bats .450 and has an ERA of 2.23, while Gwyn Burnett bats .500 with 26 RBI.

The coach noted voters chose their own criteria for how they vote. Some look at players’ statistics and district competition, while others may concentrate only on statistics.

Then if a coach isn’t a member of the association, a player on that roster can’t be considered for TCGA honors.

“You have to put a position down, and they won’t take 50 pitchers (for all-state teams),” he said. “We’ll get 150 kids nominated and we’ll have to get it down to 50.”
